For as long as I can recall my P/S pump moans. It goes up in freq with the RPM. Pump works but you can hear it inside the cab when idling. I wish it would quit moaning - any suggestions, before I spend money on another pump? Fluid level is fine.
Replace the pump. Convert to the Saginaw pump if you can. There are threads that deal with the conversion here. Make sure you flush the system and install a return line filter.
Wix transmission/PS filter
===================
Wix transmission/PS filter #58964
Ford equivalent filter kit #XC3Z-7B155-AA
Ford filter alone #XC3P-7B155-BA
200 psi working, pressure relieved, magnetic
change yearly or 12000 miles
If and when you decise to replace it (sounds as if it is comming soon anyway) get this pump http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/nc...view=Left+Side
it is a way better pump and I heard somewhere that it puts out more pressure, and more fluid.
The reason it whines is because the pump is scored/worn from the dirt and grit in the fluid. When you replace the pump, do as Torque1st said and flush the system and install a inline filter to protect the new pump. If you just swap on a new pump and not the filter - the new pump will be whining shortly...
my truck still has the original one from when it was built in 1975 i just replaced a leaking gasket in it and it still works fine no sound you can get a rebuilt one above for 60.00
Boltgunner, call around and ask for the part numbers in my post above. I suggest the Wix filter, Ford wants $$$ for them. A filter is required any time the PS system is worked on after the original factory fluid fill. The factory uses pre-filtered fluid and clean parts. The new fluid bottles at the store are actually very dirty when tested.
