The auto darkening helmets are just about the best invention ever in my opinion. I agree with the guys on testing it just to be sure it works, but mine has been great. I would not take for it.

Thanks for the information, I'll have to get one.

I have the miller elite series helment and it is auto-darkening. I love it the specs are the same as u mentioned before except mine have sensitivity from high to low. It came with the protective shield and even included extras in case you spatter one to death. It hasn't failed me yet.

Hobart is made by Miller, it's their mass merchandised line.

Yes, you can screw up your truck in complete saftey, I use a much cheaper model and retain my full ablity to post replys. It's opinion, but I don't think my smart aleck posting skills have degraded at all since using the magic helmet.

The cover of the new Harbor Freight catalog features an auto-darkening helmet for $49. It's the model I bought and it works great.

I love mine and use it whenever I can. It does not appear to have battery backup and only works reliably outdoors.

Well, I finally had an excuse (and the time) to use the new helmet and I have to say it's like magic. I was able to actually see what I was doing before and after pulling the MIG trigger. The adjustable lens darkness is absolutely great. I can see why many of you won't go back to the flip helmets - I won't either. For those who are morbidly interested, I put photos of the repair job I did using the helmet for the first time on page 15 of Earl's World.

I'm just really happy I could do a tricky (for me) repair so easily and have it come out so good. 'Course, my welding skills could still use a little work.

George,

A tip for you;

Use the 9 or 10 setting for drywall.

I tried that but I keep getting intermittent sparks from the MIG wire whenever I get near a drywall screw. I got the voltage turned all the way up and the wire feed turned all the way down, and I'm still flashing myself on the drywall screws at a shade setting of 9.

Earl,

With this crowd I can't believe no one has mentioned this special health hazard. The latest issue of Letitripistan Medical Journal specifically states that with out doubt the people who use Auto Darkening Welding Helments will eventual die. They could not define the link but they are sure that all welders using the helment will at some point die. Earl please don't let this happen to you. Quickly package it up and send it to me in sunny Florida where I promise not to let you use it. I wouldn't do this for just anyone Earl but you are part of the big FTE family and we have to look out for one another.

PS If you can't afford the postage I'll pay it. I love you that much man.

Charles in Pensacola

Earl,

You are right. People keep telling me I'm touched in the head BUT I can't feel it. I guess I'm just Special. People tell me that too.

I know you went to special school !!! rode the short bus, right ???

as for my comments on the original thread.... my 50 buck H.F. special has improved my welding skills at least 400 percent. I am now certified in daubing ! and have a first class addendum on tip replacement
