Anybody know if the 2004 SD had a locking glove box. If so,I would also like the part number of same. My 2005 has none and with a CCW permit the state of Ohio requires the gun to be locked in glove box unless holstered in plain sight on one's person while operating a vehicle. I know the "plain sight" and "concealed" are a contradiction but that's what the law states.
I had a lock on the glove box of my 2000 SD XLT. I wonder what year they discontinued it? I'm hoping a unit will interchange with the latch on the 05,and be of a close matching color.
When I carry a pistol I lock kit in the tool box....thats the best you can do without a locking glove box. Wonder if you could adapt the locking mechanism from the last
year they offered the locking box?
Its too easy to pop a glovebox open with or without a lock. Your better off mouting some kind of lock box behind the seat or under the back seat in a quad or crew cab.
My reason for the lock is not for when the truck is unattended, but for complying with the law while driving. The "on ones person in plain sight" is the hard part.I guess our law makers figured on hanging it around one's neck on a lanyard. They can't seem to explain their ambiguity, as usual.
The law just wants to keep it out of immediate reach while driving not totally unacessable i.e. "On one's person in plain sight or locked in glove box". If it's locked away under the seat or in the back you might as well just carry a carrot or a stick. At least in the glove box and with a handy key you have a better chance of accessing if the need arises.
"...on one's person in plain site..." is not out of immediate reach. I think you might be misinterpreting what they are trying to achieve.
If it is on you and can be seen, another person will instantly know you have a weapon. If it was locked in the glove box, they would assume you were going for a weapon in the process of unlocking the box.
It would be hard to surprise someone otherwise unless it was concealed AND easily accessible...hence the wording of the law.
I think that if it was in the glove box of an SD (no lock) and had a trigger lock installed, you would probably be okay.
