My uncle has got a 351C block with 4 bolt mains so I believe its the Boss motor. Does anyone know how much these things are goin for? He's looking to sell it and some other parts for it. any help would be great thanks
It could be a cj block. It depends on condition, i would say standard bore is from $175 to $350. The 2 bolt block is plenty strong and so the 4 bolt isn't worth as much as one might think.
boss engines were only made for one model year, 1971. head casting numbers would most likely be D1ZE-B, would have 7/16-20 threaded adjusters(rather than 3/8" threads) on the screw-in rocker studs and 66.1cc closed chambers. pistons are forged with domes that give about 11.7:1 compression, connecting rods had stronger bolts installed. lifters are solid and require a lash setting, and they had a bigger harmonic balancer. it's a pretty rare engine, especially to be intact after all these years. as far as just the block goes, there isn't anything that makes a BOSS block besides the 4 bolts, it's pretty much everything else that makes a BOSS. what is the build date code on the front face of the block near the timing cover dowel pin on the left as you look at it? and the casting numbers near the back underneath?
the boss has popularity in rareity and though performance can be obtained just as much with a mainline cleveland and the right parts, someone looking for a BOSS, would pay bucks for a complete # matching motor, i saw them on ebay anywhere between 3g's for a basket case boss 302 to 12 g's for a nos o mileage boss pan to intake. though the mains can be bought n obtained to have installed in a 2 main block, i think i wouldnt ask any less than 500-8 for a bare block to the right person possibly more, to the right motorhead not swayed by bells n whistles, much less.
4 bolt mains went into Cobra Jet, H.O., and Boss motors.

Don't forget thought that in 1972 Ford put flat top pistons and open chamber heads on the Boss 351 and called it the 351 H.O. Otherwise, the H.O. still including the Boss's four-bolt-main bearing block, nodular-iron crankshaft, forged rods, solid-lifter camshaft, aluminum valve covers, dual-point distributor, aluminum intake, rev limiter, and Autolite 4300D spread-bore four-barrel carburetor.
i have also read posts from C guys that have found 4 bolt blocks in 2V headed cars that had been family owned from day one, one that stands out was a station wagon! and sadly, some 4V headed cars that should've been 4 bolts have been found to be 2 bolt blocks. it seems that Ford would use whatever was on hand at times. same with the 385 series CJ's and SCJ's. i'm no particular fan of the 4 bolt block, if you look at the main webbing of a standard C block you'll see that the main webs are undercut the way they are cast and the drilling/tapping for the 4 bolts takes away some seriously necessary metal from where you'd want it to be. for the little bit of added bolt pressure on the main caps, i'd rather have the main webs not sacraficed. just my view of it...but only a Boss is a Boss
