Bench seat hinge stops misaligned
My very complete and mostly orignial (inside) '79 F250 Ranger 4x4 has a problem with the bench seat. Before I dissect a boneyard seat for answers, thought I'd see how unusual this question really is.
The seat back is hinged on either side of the seat rest. Each hinge is supposed to engage a U-shaped steel stop which also doubles as part of the seat latch assembly.
On my '79, there is more of the U-shaped steel stop protruding from behind the passenger side hinge than on the driver's side. This means there is not enough steel stop to properly engage the driver's side hinge and the seat back won't stop until it hits the back of the cab. I've checked the seats in three other of my 70's Fords and they all engage this steel stops equally on both sides of the seat.
A couple of healthy wacks with a 3-pound hammer seemed to have no affect--although it appears as though this stop runs completely though the seat and is held in place by friction-fit.
Was my seat assembled incorrectly at the plant, or has this seat hinge stop migrated out of alignment with age and use?
