1991 f150 5.0 aod idle surges worse as it warms up also lacks power especially climbing hills cleaned bypass valve--it pulls good vacumn but does go up and down with idle also disconnected TPS and no change---on the low end of the surges it almost dies--help
Start by checking for continuity at the air bypass solenoid. Someone here found a dead one with no continuity which should've been aruond 10 ohms, almost a direct connection. Next , scrub the throttle bores & plates clean with a tooth brush and solvent, even if they look clean, trust me.Finally, i'm thinking it's the map sensor all along. Check vacuum lines and if not, unplug the map electrical which should make the engine idle change and set a code.

PG, I checked the continuity at the solonoid and its 10 ohms as it should be and cleaned the passages, I'm leaning towards the map sensor like you are but am unclear how you said to check it as I hate to buy things I might not need, thanks in advance---Kilroy

a few months back i was going to do as you have been recommending, and scrub the TB. well i got under the hood, and i gave up because i couldn't figger out how to get the air hoses off without breaking them. you see, where the air hoses connect, there are the normal screw-tightened clamps, but there are also these rivet-looking things that also hold the hoses in place. i never got around to cleaning in there because i didn't want to break the hoses. how do i take them off?
Those rivet lookin' things are,if I remember by sight, rivets to hold the clamp to the hose to prevent loss after loosening, that's it. If you can't budge the hoses from the throttle body(no need to remove from the air box),they must be stuck. That's all I can figure.Loosen the clamps and shake and shake and twist and twist and pull and pull.Look at the rivets closer,I'm sure they are just to retain the clamp, not the hose itself.

thanks phillip, i'll give it a shot, even though my truck is just parked waiting for me to save up for a new engine, headers, cat, muffler, exhaust, rings and pinions, suspension.... damn i love my truck but it sure as hell is a money pit. once i get that "to-do" list complete, my truck should be good to go for a long time though.
well i popped the hoses off just like you said, with no probelm. i can't beleive i thought those rivets actually went through the hose and into the TB. hey give me a break, i'm new to all this under-the-hood stuff, but i'm trying
