I'm trying to decided what engine to put in my 79 f150 short bed 4x4 with a 4 speed manual transmission, I found a 400 but is been sitting for a while and wont turn over, I also found a 460 but didnt know if they made a bellhousing for the 4 speed transmission any help would be great
This is a question of what you will be doing with your truck and how much paper (cash) you want to spend on it. Do a search and you'll find that you can put many engines/trans combo's in 73-79 Ford trucks. There is a bell housing made for that application (460 W/ manual trans) look in the sponsors list and you'll find many part's to do these kind of swaps. Just something to keep in mind, the 460 will cost more due to bell housing, exhaust system, cooling system, motor mounts, oil pan, etc... will have to be changed or modified to fit in the 73-79 4X4 truck and the 400 would be a direct replacement, if you have a 400M or 351M currently. -Ed
I meant from the original engine that Stang is removing. If he is taking out a 300 I6 and putting in a 460, does the front need to be given some steroids?
I have always thought the blocks and heads were the same but, I'm not 100% sure. Try this question in the 385 series (460) engine forum, I'm sure someone there will know. -Ed
The 460 motor mounts are different than the 351M/400 motors. You have to buy an after market mount to fit the 460 in you truck. Ford did offer 2 wheel drive trucks with 460's but I am not sure if the frame pearches are the same or not. If one had a 300 I think you would have to change the frame pearches and mounts but I am not sure.
The bell housing for the 351M/400 is the same for the 460. You need a 460 flywheel or a 390 flywheel will work as well.
the pass. side car exhaust manifold will hit the frame. Truck 460 exhaust manifolds turn in sharper and down a little quicker clearing the frame.
