I am finishing up on a 1985 Stepside project. This truck is getting @ 19 MPG with a I-300 and a 4 speed manual overdrive. I have been looking for a factory Tachometer. Will a Factory Tach. for an 8 cyl. engine work well in a I-6 Truck? or should I hang one on the steering column? I found a tach for the 8 cyl. and I don't have any money to waste right now.
A factory tach cluster from a V8 truck will plug and play, provided you have guages and not idiot loghts. The tach has a terminal that is grounded through the engine harness in a V8 application. You'll find a brown, 2 wire plug on the drivers side inner fender, on an I-6 truck, this has a black and green wire on the cab side, and just the green on the engine side(tach signal) where the V8 engine harnesses have the black(ground) wire to switch the tach to V8 mode.
