OK, flash to the past time. I have a 72 f100 custom; 302, column shift 3 spd.
Question is, what 4 spd do I need to look for as a replacement. Upgrading to 351W, I want to use the standard column shifter for the forward gears. I have seen cable shift reverses. My grandfather did this back in the early 70s to a 68 GMC, I like the idea and would like to duplicate it.
Did Ford make any OD 4 spds other than the SROD (Single Rail OD)? I just don't want to hack up my floorboard in case later someone wants the original setup before purchasing the truck. Or maybe I just want to swap the Windsor/4 spd into another vehicle?
I guess noone has tried this in quite some time. Well, what would be a good 4spd. If my ideas don't work, I'll just put in a shifter. I have pleny of sheet metal for a new floorpan.
There is another 4 speed OD that ran at about the same time as the SROD, the SMOD, Side Mounted Over Drive. Looks just like an old cast iron top loader. These were made by Tremec for Ford in the top loader design. Gears are weaker. A shift fork or some other part has been reversed, so you have the OD gear where 3rd was in the top loader. There is a big gap between 2nd and 3rd in these. I may hold up OK behind a 351, and you have an RPM range that would mitigate the gaps. (whereas my 6 sucks wind on the 2 to 3 shift)
You can use a ZF 5 speed, but have to convert to a juice clutch. Not a big deal on an F100.
T-5's are too weak unless you baby it, but are easier than the ZF as you retain your clutch and bell. Later versions would work, bring money.
Well, looks like this page got buried again. Anyone know how to hook up the reverse? Would a choke cable work? I wanted to retain the column shifter. floor shifters just get in the way when you have 3-4 people in the truck.
PS, that gap (SMOD), would it be like my 96 ranger 4 cyl-5 spd. I lost 3rd about a year ago. Now thats a big gap, 4000 in 2nd is 1900 in 4th. The 30x9.50 15 in place of 195/70 14s dont help either!
