Whats involved in advancing the timing on the IP? I am thinking of doing this instead of getting a turbo for now. ($$)
I already turned up the fuel 1/4 turn. How much does a diesel shop charge to do this? I am not sure if I want to ruin a new IP.
If you have turned up the screw then a pyro is mandatory, you can advance the timing for a "BY EAR TIMING". A by ear is ok if you know what your doing.......
Timing should be between 8 and 9 degrees BTDC, engine hot and run at 2000 rpms. Less than 8 degrees and you will lose power and it will be harder to start. Too retarded and you can get white smoke. Above 9 degrees and the combustion noise gets pretty loud. Too advanced and you can get black smoke and can possibly damage the GPs over time.
If you would like to look at Ziggster's web page he has some good info.......
If you look at the injection pump you will notice a mark about 1/4 way around the neck on the driver side. Move the pump with the engine off - top toward passenger side - no more than the width of one of those lines. That will be about 5-7 degrees and that is a lot. And as PLC stated, a little is good and a lot is not.
A pyrometer is not mandatory just becuase I turned up my fuel. It barely even smokes unless I take off in a high gear. Ill let you know when I burn up my engine from too high of egts.
What gets you the most power? Thats all I really care about. I could care less about engine noise and the more smoke the better. I was going to put it around 10 or so.
These engines are a little different from the old 12 valve Cummins.
