After doing an engine swap in a 86 Ford F150 xlt lariat 4x4 with an AOD Transmission I now only have first and reverse no high gears. When i was doing the swap the main engine shaft slid out and i just slid it back in place could that have caused a problem like this? do you have any ideas what the problem could be?

Did the shaft come all the way out? The input shafts on some automatics will slide in all the way (such as the C-6)but there is only one correct way of having them installed...in other words did you accidently swap the input shaft end-for-end?

The input shaft spines on either end are different sizes, the converter would't have seated on the input shaft and the trans wouldn't have mounted to the engine if it was backwards. If it isn't an aod-e check the vaccum modulator, if it is an aod-e check the harness.
it is a aod-e in doing wiring check I found no tail lites. no back up lites. however in reverse with the key on the tali lites came on. if I took the wires off the trany the lites go off I haven't been able to follow the wires any further yet.
Okay, you got a hold of and AOD-E for your swap and failed to get the computer to match (remember E for electronic...). That would be my initial thought. That might explain 1st and reverse, but no mention of what happens when the gear selector has another gear selected...
Lemme know if this sparks anything...

I didn't swap the transmission just the engine. their is no up shift in drive or overdrive it stays in low. it also drives in low selection or reverse. I think it is aod-e because their are no vacuum lines.
the aod doesn't have a vacum modulater to control shifting it uses a throttle position cable which must be adjusted correctly for the trans to work properly and I have read that the trans will be ruined if it isn't adjusted correctly

Guys, I don't really think It is an AOD-E because he didn't say anthing in his post about it being a Electronic.
What kind of "swap" did you do? Same engine, same year? I just went through a swap with a larger different year motor and it had the wrong flex plate for the AOD tranny. There was is an AOD and an AOD-E, different flex plates, in different years and some mix and match years also.
