I know that the "chipped key"question has been asked before about superduties, but I am now wondering about the '05 model year. I do not think it has been asked for "05's. Are they?
They are called "PATS" keys (passive anti-theft system). All ford vehicles have these keys except the ford superduty and some base model trucks. It is a good idea to always have at least three programed pats keys for your vehicle. That way if you lose one you still have two. You can program up to eight pats keys to your vehicle by following the instructions in the owners manual but you must have two programed keys to do it this way. One or less keys and you'll have to pay a ford dealer to hook the car up to their computer. Willl cost you around $40 plus the price of the key.
Tim, Funny thing happened to me last week. Accidentally we found out that the key for our '00 F150 was the same cut as our '01 E-150. We've had these vehicles from day one. They were parked in the driveway and my father being in a big rush grabbed the wrong set of keys. I was looking for my keys when I realized that my father had left with the van and was driving on my truck keys, so I grabbed the van keys and they worked in the ignition! COOL! However the key did nothing but crank the engine, because my '00 F150 has the pats system, the engine would not start. I was not to happy because I had just picked up the truck from the mechanic's shop the night before. I thought there was another problem with it until I realized that the "THEFT" light was flasshing while I was cranking and then I remembered that my ke had tthe chip in it. Was pretty funny, I was stranded until the keys were brought back to me and my father didn't understand why!
There was a thread about this on another site about a week ago. Everyone was mostly in agreement about the SDs being non-chipped except for the Harley Edition. My '05 Harley appears to have a chipped key (it looks similar to my old '99 F150, which had the PATS system). Some said it is and some said it isn't. No one has been able to confirm if the Harley is chipped or not. I guess I should head down to the hardware store and get a key cut and give it a try.
