I am having trouble with tranny mounts in my truck, I keep breaking them. I have broken 4 mounts in 2 years. My truck is an 86 4x4 with a 6" lift. I also buit a 400 about 2 years ago that dynos out at about 500ft-lb of torque, this is conected to a 3 speed with overdrive trans. I also have a clutch from an f-600 in it. Does any one know were I can find a heavy duty enough mount? I have already tried summit, jegs etc.... I have also tried a solid mount and the vibrations are unbearable! can anybody help?
Have you thought of making your own mount out of chain and angle iron? Back in the sixties, we did that because nothing better was available that would take the abuse.
I cannot answer your tranny question, but would like to ask you a question if you don't care. I noticed your truck is a 86 with a 400 what truck did you get the motor mounts from, I thought they only put the 400 in trucks up to 82? Wondering if other year motor mounts would work I am thinking of puting a 400 in a 95 f-150 to replace the inline. thank you for your time.
I have heard of wrapping a chain around the trans/crossmember also. Maybe someone could fabricate you something. Good luck though
jwtaylor, The frame is the same on the 80-86 model so he has probably used the engine mount towers from an 80-82 with a 351M or 400 to put in his 86. He will have to explain the bellhousing though. I have seen your posts, I'm not sure if the frames were the same from 87 and up when they changed body styles. It would probably be easier to rebuild what you have as I think I have seen others mention to you. Buts thats just an opinion.

Get a catalog of universal-use suspension bushings from Prothane and Suspension Techniques. They both make high quality Polyurathane suspension bushings. Find a bushing in the catalog that could be modified to work on your truck. I'd try converting a engine mount to your tranny mount. Do a little custom welding work and fit it up and voila! You will have a nice solid mount with reduced vibration.
Maybe one of the manufacturers would design one for you. its worth a try.
Thanks for the thoughts I am working on finding the materials to fabricate a mount. As for how I put that motor in my truck, I got the frame mounts out of my old 82 f-350. the bolted right in when I unbolted my old 300 i-6 mounts. The bellhousing is a big block bolt pattern. In the early 80's the bellhousing is seperate from the tranny so I unbolted the old one and bolted up the the new one. no fabrication needed. I removed the hydrolic clutch cylinders and bolted in the old style clutch linkage. I hardly drilled or cut or anything it was very easy. A 95 is another story the motor will bolt in if you get the mounts but you would need a tranny from a 460 to bolt up to it and the the rest of the truck. It can be done without major fabrication but it will take some effort and money. The 400 is a good torque motor I would love to know if you try it
Just to repeat as in to learn, so if you bolted in a 400m in place of your 300 then it should be the same on the 95 as I do not think the mounts on the carbed and efi where different. If I am wrong someone jump in or I will assume that is the case. Thanks for the reply

I have not ruled out the rebuild of my current six, but there are some factors I have to consider. A wild six would be great but not necessarily the best bang for the buck. I can get a 8 rebuilt for what it would cost to buy a set of pistons and a cam and half the machine work for the six, that makes ya think. A person could argue the unique perspective of a built six but then again not too many people have a 400 in their 90's model trucks either if any. I have time though, I still have to have the 400 checked out, thanks for the reply
