I've been meaning to ask this for a while now... When I lock in the manual hubs on every Ford I have ever owned (Ranger, BII, F150) and drive around in 2HI I can hear a "Ping" "Ding" Clank, sounds like a hammer hitting a bell or like an old fashioned telephone ringing at about 40 mph, whatever coming from one or the other of the front wheels. Also there has always been a bad vibration driving in 2hi with the hubs locked. Is this likely a hub problem, Ujoints, axle, differential, transfer case, wheel bearings, ball joints? What's up? Like I said, This has happened on every Ford truck I have owned. The 4WD has always worked very well on them, but I always get that awful noise & vibration in 2hi. Just curious wether this is common or if I'm really that unlucky!
thats really hard to tell over the internet but i have never had any of those sounds from any of my trucks (93 f150, 85 F250, 96 F350, 72 EB, 95 BB, and 00 Ranger)
Sounds like the old front driveshaft on my '74. The splines on the slip yoke were worn to the point that the cap would work loose in short time. This natural tendency to un-balance also wreaked havoc on the front U-joints.
At low speed when the truck was "sorta" quiet, I could hear a rythmic clunking and/or clicking sound. Replacing the driveshaft let me hear all kinds of sounds I had not noticed before. Like the worn U-joints on my front axle shafts.
i have got the same problem on my 96 4x4 and i had the axle replaced and checked out and it seems there is nothing wrong but that sound gets on my nerves, i am always worried my u-joint is about to snap but it is all new
Thanks for your help. I guess I'll just keep it in 2wd until I want to get into the slop. All of these trucks have made the noise, but they have also performed very well in 4wd and no expensive breakdowns yet (knock wood). I may not have learned what's causing the sound, but I DID learn that locking the front hubs spins the front driveshaft even in 2wd, which explains the vibration thing. Thanks a bunch to everyone who typed a response!
