I'm looking at getting a 98 XLT expedition. It is currently stuck in 4x4.
What may be the problem? You can't switch it out of it. Please help me out anyone. I really would like to get the truck.

First thing I'd look at is the 4WD selector switch on the dash. They were known to fail on the '97 & '98 models. Other things to check are the vacuum system to the front diff and the electrical system down to the shift motor in the transfer case.
NoMo, Thanks for the imput. On mine when I put it in 4X4 it keeps skipping back and forth from 4X4 to AWD. Thats without me moving the switch. Doesnt do it all the time but it seems that when you need it is when it acts up! Is there any fix like blowing it out with air etc or is the best bet to just replace the switch? TIA
Switch replacement is the sure fix. I do seem to remember some (it's been a while) that were able to pull the switch apart and clean it with positive results.

You are correct. You can pull the switch apart. You will need to remove it from the dash and release the 2 plastic clips that hold it together. Clean it out well with contact cleaner and relube with dielectric grease.
I plan on getting rid of the exp this year and getting the wife a newer model so it looks like I will be pulling the switch apart and giving it a good cleaning. Thanks!
Took the 4X4 switch apart today. The center console just pulls straight out and you unplug 1 lead. 2 screws holding the 4X4 switch to the plastic center console piece and the 4X4 switch comes right out. 3 snap clips hold the 2 pieces of the switch together. When it comes apart there is a spring in there with a ball on the end that gives it a ratchet effect from going to one setting to the other. I cleaned the Green contacts and re applied dielectric back on. Works like a champ! Easy fix too.
