Just got the time to check why the rough idle on my 70 302.
Correct me if I'm wrong. If my #1 piston is at the top of it's stroke and the rotor is aligned with the plug wire of the same, shouldn't my timing mark be on the little zero? Actually,I aligned the timing mark and the rotor first, and yes there is plenty of slop before the rotor actually moves. Anyhoo, the piston was nowhere near the top. Had to rotate all the way to #4 on the distributor. Now..this thing has always idled rough, but going down the road,it runs like a,well,it goes pretty darn good. Should it be running at all?
possibly bad news, your harmonic dampener could have slipped. That would make the timing marks be way retarded, or make your timing look extremely advanced. This condition would also distroy your crankshaft, because instead of dampening the engine harmonics, it could amplify them.
On the other hand, someone could have replaced the pointer with the wrong piece somewhere along the way.
Hard to say exactly.
I suspected as much. Oh well,if it doesn't go belly up before summer,I'll get a new one. Since there's so much slop between the rotor and crank turning,I'll put a new chain and gears on too. It's been running like this for two years now,if it goes,I'll get another.
