Just got old 74, automatic trans. went to drive it last night and put in drive and could not get it out of drive. the shifter will move through all positions but it will not go to neutral, reverse or park. anyone know where to start????
thanks!
Welcome to the forum. I would start with the linkage from the column to the tranny. Sounds like it either came off at one end or the column sleeve is broken.
We have a transmission specific forum where this thread will be moved to for more specific help.
What happened to me was the snap ring that holds the shift linkage to the shift lever on the trans. came off. The linkage came unhooked from the transmission lever. About a .10 cent repair for a new snap ring if this is the problem.
A side note. There is a plastic bushing that goes in the hole in the transmission shift lever. Make sure it is good. If it's gone or there is too much play, the linkage could bind and force off the snap ring and you're back to square one. Good luck.
if the linkage has fallen off you'r lucky if mot you need a tranny I had my 76 tranny slipped just alittle bit between 2cnd and 3rd well I was parked on a hil pull it our of park to reverse and heard a "pop" no reverse all forward gears.... even when you started it in park it would lunge forward.... come to find out all the cluth paks had welded themselves together .... same thing happend to my suburban... did I say I dislike automatics
