I've changed the ball joints in a 96 using a little penetrating oil, a ball joint press, and a big hammer(2lb sledge). It was a 2WD, so I didn't have to fight any axles, but unfortunately I'm gonna have to do mine, and also the u-joints while I'm in there cause they are starting to squeak.
One thing to remember when using the heat wrench - heat can weaken steel parts if not used carefully! I don't think anyone wants to weaken suspension parts, so I'd suggest using it only as a last resort.
