I got an 87' bII 2.9L and i went to autoparts store cuz i failed emissions for too many HC. the limit is 160 and i had 178. Any way they hooked up the diagnostic to my truck and came back with code 33. They said that's for the EGR valve, and it may be not working or malfunctioning.
Can anyone tell me what that thing does? Where in the engine compartment to look to find it? Also is it cleanable or is it easier to just replace it?
thanks in advance,
-ALF
your egr valve is located on your upper intake right next to your TB actually underneath the tb. it has a pipe leading down to your driver exhuast manifold
facing your engine it's on your right hand side.
in between your upper intake and ac/compressor.
What type of code 33 did you get -- KOEO, memory, or KOER? Don't replace an EGR valve based on a KOEO code. KOEO codes have to be electrical in nature, so the valve itself has nothing to do with a KOEO code.
If you want to pull codes yourself at home, it only requires a paper clip and a voltmeter/test light. See Kenn00's tech info post for a description of how to pull EEC-IV codes.
Just to conclude this. I ended up changing O2 sensor and went from 32" super swampers to 24" tires and got tested again. Passed emissions with CO 147 when limit is 160. last time got 171. not sure if speed sensor gives info to computer, thats why i changed the tires. Fazang out.....
