I left a post the other day about my 460 in a 87" f-250.
well i got a little help i was told that it was a 75 lincoln.
but i was still wondering about the other numbers and what they ment.
I got the #'s off of the top of the intake manafold at the front of the motor
I know that d5 means 75 but thats about all i know!
thanks to the guys who helped me the first time and any more info would be great!
C=1960's D=1970's E=1980's, so D5= 1975.
The V and E identify the engine and model of car or truck. D5VE= 1975 460 Lincoln 460. I'm not sure about the 460 part, "E" might actually indicate "V-8" Lincoln but you get the gist. There are some guys here that study this stuff quite extensively so I am sure they will ring in here when they get tired of wrenching on their trucks today and go on line.
The year part of what I posted (example - D5) is what I am most confident of the validity here.
how do you tell if it is from a lincoln and what does the rest of the numbers mean?
and i still dont understand why it would run better using the 1973 (.034)spark plug gap
if it is a 75 and supposed to be set at .044
all the books i can fid about it say that after 1973 they all had electronic ignition...
but i know for a fact that this has points in it. should i leave them at .034 or put them back to .044?
Put your plugs at 34 because the points set up wont handle the larger gap..If you retrofit the ignition and put in a blue tag ford duraspark set up then you can put in the plugs with the 44 gap..The V stands for the lincoln line of vehicles that the part was originaly designed for..The E stands for engine part..A is for chassis..B is for body..D3Va would be a 73[thats the year the part was original designed],lincoln,chassis part...D0Ve...70lincoln engine part..All this is just casting number,then you have production numbers, and then service numbers..Its all a b...h to remember...
Thanks again for all your help!with out it i would still be searching through threds trying to peice info together! buy the way this may sound stupid but is this considerd a good motor?
it back fires out off the carb on the start and it is really hard to start when its cold.
but when its warm it starts right up. should i adjust the carb.? it has dry powdery carbon on the plugs (oddly enough just on some of the plugs it is only built up on one side of the plug. any ideas?
thanks
