Exclamation Difference between 302's

Hey Group,
I have my project 69 F-100 which was passed down to me. Since I have gotten it, it blew 2 oil pumps, water pump, transmission, engine (rod out the oilpan). Not to mention all the little things going wrong EX broke wheel bearing.

Anyways, The blown engine was replaced with a 85 5.0 mustang engine. I also bought a 70's era small block for it. My questions are: What are the differences with these engines?? I know the heads are different but what is different?

With that 85 being a 4bbl and me only having a 2 I got a 4bbl to 2bbl carb spacer. Think it will run?? Im almost up to running it, haveing problems timeing it.

I believe the '85 H.O. had forged pistons...not positive though. BUT, those '85 heads are probably not what you think they are. The "good" heads came out in '87, and I don't think the '85 heads differed greatly from all the previous years. It's kind of pointless anyway if you plan on running a 2bbl(the spacer plate should work fine).

Those motors are also balanced differently, I believe that change happened around '78, so be careful when mixing components, while they will bolt together, they may not be compatable.

Make sure that you use the firing order for the 85 engine if it still has the stock cam.

85 was the first year for roller cam and forged pistons, a notably strong short block. I think the major difference in the heads is pedestal mount rockers. In my opinion these are better than push in studs (earlier windsors), on a stock engine that is. You would want screw in studs if you are planning any more cam than stock. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT BALANCER/FLYWHEEL COMBO. I once bought a 76 302 to install in a 82 mustang GT and I put the 82 flywheel on it, through it together, and completely destroyed the main bearings.

From: Destin/Ft. Walton Beach,
85 has true flat top pistons, with no valve "eyebrows".

When I try to run the engine, it pops out of the carb, sometimes just a poof and others an actual flame. As for the fireing order, my chilton manual lead me to beleave the fireing order for the 302's are all the same???? What was in the book matched my orginal 69 engine's fireing order. The poping would be incorrect fireing order, timeing off.

Here is the order I am using now: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

Assuming the order is correct (my chilton manual is from 65-86) could it be that I timed the engine at TDC instead of 10 BTDC???? I found out what year engine was in it after the day was over =(

HELP PLEASE!
Justin

nope, if it has a 4 bbl intake, its an HO engine. I beleive it was 85 that Ford started putting in 351W camshafts in the 5.0 for better flow. This was the HO package, 351 camshaft, 4 bbl induction, and slightly higher compression. It made quite a difference in performance. Your HO will be much more rev happy than that stock 302 2 bbl.

IMO, you would probably be better off tossing out the adapter plate and 2 bbl for a 4 bbl carb. If so, you want around 525 to 600 cfm. Brand doesnt really matter, for a truck, vacuum secondaries will work best, and an electric choke

P.S. I thought it was like 87 for the roller cam, thats why the 86s have so much interfereance??? Could be wrong though, been a few years since I messed with those Big cams

If your engine is a true 85 mustang 4bbl 302 then you have the wrong firing order.

Here is the firing order.

FIRING ORDER 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
The Dist turns CCW

I think that should get that thing fired up. Let me know what happens.

The manual does state "351W,351M,400, 1978 & later models fireing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8" My mistake. I will try that on for size, =) THANKS GUYS!

The 2bbl is temp, im putting an edelbrock 4bbl on it, waiting for pay day. Also rebuilding my blown engine. Any suggestions? I was thinking edelbrock performer using stock heads.
