Ok fellas, here's one for ya exhaust specialists. I also posted this on the muffler section, but I figured since we were dealing with a 1986 truck I might find people here in this thread who've done something like this. Sorry in advance if it shouldn't be here, Ken, I just wanted as many responses as I could get. I got a 1986 F-250HD 4x4. Got headers, Edelbrock Performer intake, Edelbrock 600 4bbl carb, and as of right now, Flowmaster 30 series: one muffler, dual in/dual out. I wanna know if I can remove that and put on a stock Ford Muffler (single in/single out) I took off my 99 F-150 and use a Y shaped collection pipe at the front and back of the muffler to hook up to the two exaust pipes running from the headers and the two that run out the side to the chrome tips that are on there right now and use the regular stock Ford muffler which is single in/single out. Reason being right now it is entirely too loud, the Flowmaster...I mean you can here me coming a mile away, and as nice as that is sometimes, I'd like to seriously cut down some (not all) of that sound without spending too much, and the muffler I took off the 99 F-150 is basically brand new, used for about 3 weeks, so it's in great condition, like new. Would all I need is some 2.5" C-clamps, the 2 into 1 collection pipes for front and back, and a few short pieces to connect it all together? Preferably like to do this so if I wanted to, I could take 20 minutes and hook the Flowmaster right back on if I regretted the swap (which I doubt I will cause trust me it's sooooo loud) or if I wanted some good loud sound to P.O. the uptight neighbors, thrill some Chevy boys, you know....

The y-adapters I have seen are expensive. Summit Racing sells one.

The reason it is sooo loud is because you are running both sides of the engine through one one chamber flowmaster. The 30 series is pretty much a race only muffler made for classes that require mufflers. It would be a total waste of money to put the headers and exhaust on it you already have and throw on a cheap stock non-flowing muffler. Get a pair of 40 series flowmaster 3 chamber muffs and try them out. At least keep the dual exhaust setup with some kind of decent aftermaket muffler, otherwise you might as well have flushed the cash for the headers and exhaust work down the toilet.

I used the dual in-dual out Flowmaster 50 on mine. My son thinks it's too quiet, but it sounds great when i get on the gas.

Well truth be told, the truck had the headers when I bought it, so I didn't sink any cash there...the exhaust was only $300, so nothing too bad there. I am actually thinking of getting two small single in/single out mufflers and hooking them up....the truck is just wayyyy too loud right now, and it's outta control. I need to seriously dampen this sound, and I'm not too concerned with a little loss of flow. If anything, I should restrict a tiny, there are no cats, no emissions, no real vacuums, anything.

That was another option, the 50's are quieter, which I would like...don't get me wrong, the 30's are sweet, real head turners, people know I'm coming when I'm not even in sight! But It's at the point where I would like to actually hear my girl talk to me when we're cruisin, rather than me just noddin my head or sayin "uhuh,.,...uhuh...uhuh"! I think I'm gonna do the single in/single out non-performance mufflers, I really need to quiet this ride, and that's the cheapest route...they're only like $20 each at Autozone.

Well this truck never used converters..it was made without them, as were some other 250's and most 350's. Plus I don't want to spend a few hundred on the converters. If I were to put on the ones that other 250's used, they would be anywhere from $150-$225 each, and that's definately no option when I could get nonperformance mufflers for $20 each. I dunno.....

Yeah that sounds like a pretty good idea, hooker, dynomax, flowtech, and a few others sell decent muffs for round $25 a pop. I have two Flowtech raptors, cost me bout $45 for the two, on my truck. I like it but I think it needs more grunt. Have you thought about a 2in 2out Flowmaster 50 series? Otherwise I'll trade ya my Raptors for your flowmaster one chamber 2in 2 out?

Hehe, well I dunno about that....like I said, I plan on connecting it all with just clamps, no welding, so if I felt like it I could switch back to the Flowmaster to get some cops to chase me! Haha. How do the Flowtech Raptors sound? Are they nice and quiet, cause seriously, the 30 here is WAYYYYYY too loud. I was told I could try to use the exhaust tip "plugs" that insert in the tips and cut sound alot, but i think those would seriously block free flow, even if they're slotted. I thought about the dual in/dual out 50 series, but I don't wanna spend much money if I don't have to. I'd prefer to get 2 cheap single in/single out mufflers to hook up. BTW, Fordtruxrok, good luch with that engine swap...I think it'll be sweet, and it's god you're using the older truck as a guinea pig and not the 96. That would be a shame to cut it all up and have it not work out. Let me know what you do Saturday with the engine, if you get it. Where are you from? I might, just might consider trading the Flowmaster...how old are the Raptors? the Flowmaster is about 3 months old, and looks great still, no rust or anything. I also got that 1999 F-150 factory muffler (single in/single out) that would be great if anyone needed a stock, rather than spending $60 through Ford. If anyone wanted to trade that, I dunno if you would want to Fordtruxroks, but it's jus somethin to think about. Later fellas

Actually guys, I've hit that spot in the road, we all come to it at some point. I'm afraid I have to part with my baby. I'm going back to school in the city in January, and it's not exactly easy to try and park her in the little spots/low garages. It's killing me, and I've been dreading this all along. i need to get something smaller, more economical on gas, good for driving everyday to Boston, and my truck drinks too much gas for that. So, I know it shouldn't be posted here, I'm gonna add it to the classifieds....but if anyone in the area of Boston, MA or if you don't mind travel to pick her up, New England, she's on the market

This hurts alot. I love my truck, but I gotta go with something smaller for now. Maybe a Ranger or Mustang, I dunno, but I will be loyal to this site and to my Fords forever.

The details:

*1986 F-250 HD 4x4
*4.10 gears, C-6 trany
*Reg. cab, 8' bed
*351 Windsor w/ approx 90k miles
*Edelbrock Performer 351 aluminum intake
*New Edelbrock 600cfm 4bbl electric choke carb
*New Edelbrock Pro-Flo air cleaner
*Recent (last 3 months) flowmaster 30 series exhaust w/ 18" long 3" chrome slash tips exiting in front of pass rear wheel
*Headers
*New startor w/ starter shield
*New 3 wall radiator, hoses, thermostat
*New Gabriel Pro-Ryder gas charged shocks
*Clarion 45W x 4 channel CD
*Fresh primer grey coat, ready to paint
*Bedliner
*Black grill gaurd w/ Baja Off Road lights
*Sliding rear window

If any of you are interested, or if you know anyone interested, and are in the area, contact me at floydman9803(No Email Addresses In Posts!)
or through here as I'm a frequent poster. I'm asking $2500/b.o.
Sorry if this shouldn't be posted here, but I want to sell her to someone who can appreciate her, and no-one can like a true Ford Truck Enthusiast. Thanks for all your help with trouble shooting her these past few months guys, I think we've worked out all her kinks, and she's running strong now thanks to all of you. Later fellas, and thanks again.

~Ryan

If I wasn't sitting next to Chicago, I would come pick your truck up tomorrow. $2500 sounds like a steal, what condition is the body?? I too am deeply, DEEEEEPLY heartbroken over the fact you must sell your truck. But, hell school is more important, I think??

Yeah, it's upsetting, but like I said, I'm sure most of us come to this point. Hopefully it's only temporary, and when I graduate in 2 years maybe I can get my hands on a new rig. One can hope, right?! Hehe. The body like I said is primer grey right now. I'm gonna be giving it one more coat to clean it up. The interior isn't perfect, but it is on it's way. I redid the dash and trim and door panels and headliner. Top half is black, bottom is a light grey. The body of the truck is in pretty good condition, I mean no holes. In fact, most of the whole body is solid, with the exeption of the rear of the passenger side of the bed, which could use a little grinding to take down a little caked on rust. It has a new passenger side fender and door, and the drivers side fender and door are in excellent condition, coming off other trucks. Before I did the first coat of primer I put some rust inhibitor on some areas, and then it was primed. I went over the chassis and sprayed that rubberized undercoating for some protection fom the New England winters, they can really mess a car or truck up. It has a 3" body lift and the rear bumper that was on there was banged up, so I fabricated my own dropcenter style bumper using a 2x10 and a 2x6 piece of pressure treated wood, I think it looks sweet. But for the most part the body is good, will look alot better with some paint. I was thinking of painting it, my dad's an electrostatic refinisher and has 25 odd years experience in painting things from office furniture to roll cages on Porches (those things are a pain inthe neck to paint, I've helped him a few times with that). Only problem is I don't want to spend a lot of time on that stuff, I'd just like to sell her as is to someone who can appreciate a big strong truck and can have fun doing mods (I've found that the 80-86 model trucks and 80-86 carbureted engines are not only fun, but relatively easy to work on).
