Go Ahead and ....JUMP!

I have a 47 100HP Flathead with 6v to 8v conversion. Is it safe to jump with 12v? , and is there a specific way to "jump safe" so as not to damage life or property? Thanks Pete Any thoughts would be great.

If you have a negative ground, you could remove the positive terminal, attach negative jumper to negative ground, and positive jumper to postive disconnected cable. It should not hurt starter at all. Actually if you have a discharged 8V battery I don't know why you couldn't jump in the normal manner, assuming you have negative ground. What was done to convert to 8 volts? I used to have an old IH tractor, and just stuck an 8 volt battery in to replace the 6 volt, without doing anything else.

I'll add...just make sure all lights, and accessories are off...then no issues. As mentioned above the starter will handle it.

Hell man, this isn't rocket science, just give it a push and pop the clutch, she'll go!!!

six volt wiring is a hell of a lot heavier too, connect up the jumpers if you want to.

I have a 47 1 1/2 ton that is 100% orriginal (62,000 miles). 12 volts will not hurt a 6 volt starter at all, but it sure will raise hell with the dual points. (Not to mention it being a very good way to have a 6 volt battery blow up in your face) Whenever I have to boost it, I do so on the starter side of solinoid switch, not at the battery. Just make sure the key is on and it is out of gear. Ground to the block and just hold the other lead to the solinoid. You dont have to be concerned about the positive ground system when you dont boost at the battery. It will boost with 12 volts, positive lead to the solinoid and the negative lead grounded to the block. Good Luck

I just get a little...Jumpy!

Thanks for your help. Re: 8v Jumping with 12v source. The conversion from 6v to 8v DID NOT change the polarity., the only component that looks to have been changed was the voltage regulator and Battery(8v). The system is still POSITIVE GROUND. If you have any thoughts on "jumping with cables" please jump in! The truck is a 2 ton stakebody and you ain't pushing it. Thanks Pete
