I just received a replacement instrument cluster that includes a tachometer. The odometer reads about 95,000 miles but my current truck reads at about 125,000. Can the odometers be switched? If so, how?
States may differ on the law, but basically, odometers are not to be touched. This will result in much lower resale value because it has to be asumed there are high miles, and it's ilegal to tamper with the odometer. If you still want to replace it, check with your local RMV or maybe even at your local police station, but I doubt they will be as willing to help you out. This is why on a title it will typically say on the back, something to the effect that "to the best of my knowledge the odometer reading is correct", or something like "I believe my odometer has been tampered with/reset".

I am fully aware that there are laws dealing with tampering of odometers that is why I want my original odometer of 125,000 miles installed into the instrument cluster that shows 95,000 miles. I thought I saw a post on how to do this a while back, but I can not find it after doing a search.
You'll have to swap the whole speedometer assembly, on the 80-86's it's just two bolts on the back of the cluster, and I'd assume it's the same on the newer trucks with cable driven speedometers. Or, you could move the numbers around, but, it ain't exaclty legal.....

ohhh ohhh, I see what you're saying. Sorry for that confusion. You want it to read the same as it did in the other truck. That shouldn't be a problem, but I'd still check with your insurance company or someone who is an expert on that. Makes sense, though, don't see why it would be a prob.
Either keep your old odometer/speedometer part (easy to remove form the cluster), or go to your local speedometer shop, they're certified to do these kind of things. That's what I did when I swapped mine (see webpage).
