FE Intake question

I have a 70 F250 with a basically stock 360 except for headers and dual exhaust. With the C6 Transmission and 3.73 gear in the rear end it runs pretty strong from 1500RPM to 4000RPM but its only a 2BBL intake and carb. Not to mention the carb is pretty wore out and tired.
I just won a bid on EBay for an Edelbrock Streetmaster 390 intake (Item #4529366613) but Im worried that it wont perform well at lower RPMs. Its a single plane intake and I cant find much technical info on it. I thought Id hunt down an affordable 600CFM carb and try this setup before deciding for sure but I wish someone could give me some idea of what to expect perfomance wise from this setup before I spend more money on something I may not even like. I do plan on installing a mild cam/lifter set at a later date.
Anyone got any info on this intake? Thoughts are also apreciated.

I had the same intake on a stock 390 with a 600 holley, headers, and and points style ignition, and it ran great from idle through 5500rpm. They are great looking, great running intakes.

I had a C-6 w/ fairly low gears, and I commuted on the highway about 15 miles one way. I was getting around 16 mpg. There is alot of rice at work and occasionally I would mix it up during the "5 o'clock 500", and this will tarnish your gas mileage (but it sure is fun). . . If you have electronic ignition, and put a good tune on it, that will help to. . .

A stock cast iron 4bbl intake, like the GT would perform better than that one for what you want. Single planes are made to produce HP at the higher RPM band and gives up low end torque for the trade off.

You can get a 390 GT intake from DSC Motorsports or check your local wrecking yard. Usually can get something for $50, then another $50 to ship if you can't get it local.

You have shaved off about 50lbs going to an aluminum one, but I think you'd be power ahead going to a dual plane cast iron 4bbl over that single plane.

Check out the FE forum on this site for more info, or even ask your question there to get some more feedback.

Is there a big loss of low end power? I have a single plane intake on my 65 Mustang with a 289, haven`t driven it much but it seems fair for lower rpm.

Not sure and every motor will respond differently depending on cam, headers, carburation , heads, compression, etc.

A 289 will likely respond better with a single plane since they aren't much for making torque, they're a better high RPM HP motor than low end grunt anyway. The FE 360/390 however are better on the low side.

The streetmaster that these guys are running is a decent low end manifold. I have a dual plane offy on my current ride and it has no more grunt than the single plane streetmaster. Plus they already own the thing. If your talking about a Victor race or something than I would agree, but many of the "street" type single planes floating around form the 70's and 80's run great idle through 5500, and the torque loss of running a single plane will be unnoticable. Like you said though, if I has running a hot cam, headers, high compression, and stall converter, It would make a big difference.

For what its worth I wouldn't trade your edelbrock streetmasters for 3 cast iron GT manifolds (especially to gain 3 ftlbs of torque on a stock engine). To each is own, but you already possess them, run them and see for yourself.
