sudden no charge

After driving the truck to my parents house, then the WaWa, after I turned the truck on in the parking lot it made this terrible whine for about 1 minute, and the battery light stayed on with the voltmeter reading under 10. I have a 3G160 amp alt with 4 gauge wire for plwoing, with 2 line 80 amp fuses which were both good. Tried reving the engine for a bit, but nothing went up. The night before the whine was there because of an empty power steering pump, but it was full when this happened. Any ideas? I'm goin gto go over wiring this afternoon. Battery is a Red Top, 3 months old, and alt is a little over a year old. Truck used for plowing. Thanks

Well, I looked closely to find that the alt pulley isn't moving. Guess that is why the belt was screaming lately. Can I buy just the bearings, or do I just get a new alt?

You can try to repair the alternator, but I woud have a book handy to help you through. There are sometimes tricks to getting an alt back together. Like putting paper clips in some holes to hold the brushes back so it slides together.
