I have a 91 F-150 with 123000 miles on a 302 motor. I just purchased this truck fairly reasonable but it has a pretty bad knock at startup which gets better after a few minutes, but still knocks. Its not a little tick, its more like a clunking! The oil pressure gauge is towards the low side but does not fluctuate. Any suggestions on what this might be? Should I look for a replacement engine or fix this one? Is it reasonable to think I can repair for under $1000.00?
Get a known good mechanical oil pressure guage and check the oil pressure first. If it still registers the same way, check the bearings using plastiguage.
Going into shop tomorrow - advised by my mechanic that I shouldnt drive it 600 miles pulling a boat, go figure! I still have no clue what it is, truck runs fine but knocks terribly on cold startup and when under load!
Well, mechanic called today, I lost what he was saying after wrist pin and big bucks! So the secondary question now is - will any 5.0 302 fit even if from a mustang? I guess I will go with a used engine vs rebuild since I dont have a ton of money to spend!
The mustang engine has a different camshaft oriented more for top end power where the truck engine cam is designed to make low end torque and midrange power. If you use a mustang block you will end up reusing alot of things from your trucks engine.
