Exclamation Straight Axle Conversion

I need to find a straight axle for my 93 F-150. I have searched all over the web but I have yet started to look at the junk yards. I would like to find one rebuilt (new bearings etc). I also too need to know all the things I need to know about doing a straight axle conversion . Any info is great!

Check the article in the tech section of FTE, called 78 solid axle into a 95 f150 , for some info.

Also check out Fabritech, they sell complete kits. www.setstr8.com

am i mistaken in assuming that most of the solid axel conversion kits are merely new parts of the mounting hardware used in the pre-80 trucks... Basically...Could you grab a donor truck from a junkyard(ex.78 f150) and take all of the mounting brackets for the leafs and the steering out of it ajd bolt it on and have the same thing???

thx for any info....

78/79 f150 or bronco as a donor vehicle will basically give you all you would need. There coil sprung front ends not leaf springs. There is some minor trimmings to be done, eg the engine cross member needs to be modified for clearance. It is fairly easy and lots of guys in my area have done it.

so the 10 inch kits from bronco graveyard are just all the origional parts(only new made) and the big coils...Besides the extended radius arms, dropped pitman arm and the adjustable trac bar...is the any other parts or brackets needed to lift these...

Well, from what I read at BGyard, you will still have to buy an axle, brake lines, rear springs and blocks, after you pay $1800 for the kit. $400 more for a used and $1800 plus for a rebuilt axle, plus $925 to complete the front and the rear.

Though this may be worth it for a guy with no fab skills and minimal tools, I would just as soon buy a 78/79 F150/bronco and your choice of lift coils and go from there. I know around here you can pick up a pre 80 f150 for around $500 bucks that is still on the road. You could probably do the conversion for under $2000 and a little time with the measuring tape.

Or

Pick up a used truck plus the 9" kit and it could possibly be less.

10" of lift with a SAS conversion for $800 bucks, sign me up! The SAS conversion for $800 yes, but I not with a 10" lift. My $2000 price guess was including the 10" lift, driveshafts lengthened, shocks, leaf springs, etc...

If you can weld you can save yourself A LOT of money, as said above a donor truck can be fairly cheap and you just have to transfe everything over, you do need lift coils, some steering stuff (pitman arm), and shocks.

The Fabritech kit sells for almost 2x what it should and for $1750 doesn't inlcude the axle or the coil springs. There is an entire forum dedicated to this very thing at a very famous big bronco site.

No, the kit (using Fabritech as an example) has track bar brackets that fit the engine cross member, trac bar, extended radius arms and C bushings, and lower spring mounts and a tierod/drag link setup, none of which are stock. In fact, the track bar brackets from the 78/79 trucks won't work on a 80-96 ttb truck.

There are 2 main ways to go SAS, one with leaf spring the other with coils. There are several ways to do each.

what about cage

I have been doing research on this very topic for a little bit of time and from what people say the fabtech is a complete kit it lacks in a lot of areas.
this is if you dont want to do leaf spring

A place called cage offroad is in the process of doing a complete sas lift kit and if i where to drop the $ on a kit this would be it they give you complete tubular radius arms that look tough as nails not whimpy like the other one.
Iv been talking to the main owner and he will be releasing the full kit shortly there website is
http://www.cageoffroad.com/home.html click

the radius bars are here http://www.cageoffroad.com/page/page/1241774.htm

The fabritech kit is the one that BGYard sells and yes the price is correct. One of my posts furthur in the discussion states the fact that the kit does not include the axle and I price out the remaining parts from BGyard. You may have missed the post when cruising threads, I know I do it.
