I have just spent the whole day dropping a set of hooker headers in to the holes on a 75 f250 4x4 with a 360 4spd.. not fitted them as the engine in minus heads and intake right now...
ok, so after taking off everything, even the brake servo/master cylinder and everything near by I have finally got both sides dropped in the gaps... oh, and i had to lift the engine about 4" too..
But now the starter motor wont go back in, theres no room between the block and the header to get the g!t in there... any ideas ? do these headers need a smaller starter ?
Had a simliar problem when I installed my Hedmans, I had to remove all the clutch linkage it was a mess. I had to lift the engine up about 2 inches, then I put the starter on, then I put the headers on. Its a huge nusances I know, but its worth it belive me.
btw how much do you spend on the hookers?
I had to do the same thing. Jack up motor, slide header up, then install starter, then could bolt up the header. Ive got hedmans, Im looking into finding shorty headers thou,
I've found that if you slide the headers as far forward as they will go, you can install the starter from the top back by the firewall. If twisted around just right it will slide right past the headers.
i managed to forget to remove the clutch linkage to, so im gonna need to mend the bracket (out comes the welder).. I think I'll have another go at jacking the engine and try again....
this is why I reccomend a mini high torque starter....It goes in easier and I'm less concered about killing it with the heat...I'm pretty sure I can unbolt my header at the collector and head and slip the starter in without lifting the engine. But, I've also got FPA headers. They may be shaped differently.
I know the mini-starters are expensive, but with all the failures I hear about from the cheapies...it was no-brainer for me.
Had a heat problem with a newly rebuilt starter. Had to dimple the headers and slid a heat shield in. Still had a heat problem. Got a mini high torque starter, problem solved, and I can get it in and out by just taking off the wheel.
