Polishing combustion chambers

Will be getting my Aussie cleveland heads soon and I am planning on polishing the combustion chambers to deter hot spots. I have never done this or read how to do it- now dont get me wrong, I'm not an idiot, I understand the general concept, but I need to know about what steps to take and what materials to use to get the job done.

There is an article link below on polishing and porting. Unfortunately it has some bad advice about gasket matching but some information is OK. The article was written by an abrasive supplier so they wrote about everything even if it was a no-no. When polishing remove any casting marks and scratches with each grit before starting with the next grit. Use each grit in a different direction from the previous grit (at right angles). Make sure you do the same amount of grinding on each cylinder or you will have mismatched compression. It is a good idea to CC the heads after you are finished to see if there are any corrections to be made. Getting a the head volume will allow you to machine the head and decks etc properly for a true compression ratio.

Good post Torque1st...just to follow up n his advice do get the heads pre CC'd as you will then find out where you can make approximate adjustments...to aid in the balancing of the compression.

Good point! I have seen a number of engines over the years with mismatched chambers. I think the machining and locating methods improved a lot during the late 70's. Have you noticed the locating bumps in some combustion chambers? Unfortunately all it takes is a chip in the wrong place during machining to throw it all off.

Get them CC'd afterwards too -hehe!
