I have a 1999 Ranger Super Cab. (101,000 miles - just bragging, this problem has been going on for at least 50,000 of them). The Door Ajar light stays on sporadically, along with the dome light. If i start driving and the Ajar light comes on, the dome stays on for only about 30 seconds then goes out. If I park the truck and the Ajar light was on when i shut off the key, the dome stays on for about an hour then goes out. it is a real annoyance, especially since it does not do it all the time (about 30-40% of the time) I have jimmied with door handles, slammed doors, nothing helps. I had a similar problem with my 97 taurus, which the idiots at the ford dealer had no idea how to fix it. in the taurus case, i had to remove all the interior lights (and there are several) because the lights never went out. In the old days a plunger in the doorframe was the culprit - now there is a different method, which as i said, the ford mechanic shrugged off because he didn't know. any suggestions?
I have had this issue with my 2001. Ajar light and dome light on for no reason. I finally noticed that it was narrowed down to hard turns and bumps which lead me to my rear doors and the possibility that they were not latching properly. Sure enough when I pulled the door apart the latch was very corroded and close to needing a replacment. Being a cheap as I am I decided to clean and re lube the latch. So far so good, 4 months problem free.
Thats a very common problem, the switch(es) are in the door latch now, not on the jam. Check out the link on this topic in the tech info thread at the top of this forum.
I got the fix from here in the forum. Just spray some WD-40 into the door locking mechanism. It solved my problem in 30 seconds and I haven't had any problems since then.
I have a 98 that had the same problem six years ago. I performed a bunch of electrical checks; fuses, lights, etc. This was my remedy: Spray the heck out of the door latch with WD-40......no problems since........
Right, WD-40 seems to be the tried and true fix for this common problem. If a simple spray doesnt fix it, you may have to take it apart and clean it. The sensor for the door ajar light is actually built into the latch.
