engine swap

can I replace my 7.xL with a 6.xL ? The 7L is a '91 with auto trans. It's blown. My other truck has the 6L with manual. (puttting in a 400 or 460 gas).

Will the trannys match?
Will the computer go haywire?

Thanks

The 6.9 has no computer. You'll need something to control the 91 Auto tranny, I'd suspect it's an E4OD?

It'd prolly be cheaper and easier to just fix whats wrong with the 7.3 in the 91.

Personally I'd never swap a ga$$er into a diesel rig. It just rings backwards to me.

yes, it's an E4OD. The 7.3 sucked a valve. Besides cylinder wall damage, the crank is torqued.

Have you looked around for a replacement 7.3 or 6.9?
I've seen them go for around $1500/2000 on ebay. About the same price that a stand alone transmission controller would cost.

You could go the short block route. Try http://www.dieselautoservices.com/

They have a great reputation, fix the inherant problems, and are in Canada, so they tend to be cheaper than most.

What controls the 7.3 tranny now?
It will work with the 6.9 just as well.
Put the 7.3 glow plugs in the 6.9 and the wiring harness off the 7.3 on the 6.9.
You will also have to use the 7.3 fuel filter/water seperator on the 6.9.
Bolts right up.
The bell housing on the 6.9 will not fit any gas motor.
The auto on the 7.3 will bolt up to the 6.9.
