Emission system

This is the biggest issue I have between me and the road. A few months ago I stuck some headers on the truck:1986 F150 5.0L.
I noticed that some time before that the tube that comes out of the catalytic converter was welded shut and the other end where it would have entered the emission system was wide open. I failed the emission test with high o2. I decided to rebuild the emission system. I believe that the curent catalytic converter is shot due to rich fuel mixture. My issue is this; If I put the emmission system back together and then get the exhaust system replaced how will I know if the rich fuel mixture thing has been fixed? I would be killing another converter if I did not know. I thought about tralering it around but what a hasle. I guess I need to know what steps I should take and in what order to get this thing done.

Thanks

It seems like there is something missing. I'm assuming you have EFI and I would guess that you should have an O2 sensor in the exhaust system before the cat. If this is missing, you're computer is probably trying to compensate and causing the engine to run rich. It sounds like you should tap an O2 sensor into one of your headers and tie it back into the computer somehow.

Ahhh Thanks, I got the headers with the O2 port. I was talking to the guy that sold me the headers, he does Full exhaust systems. he said I was missing the tube that goes from the cat to the emission system. Im taking it in for a exhaust system and next door for a emission check. Hopefuly Ill be back on the road soon. Thanks for the help..

You need the full blown shop manual, I'm thinking.

If you ran headers, the flow through a stock system just might kill off your gains. So you should also be keeping a weather eye out for an aftermarket cat designed for higher thru-flow.

There are quite a few manufacturers out there, but if the worst case comes along, do the McDonalds thing - SUPER-SIZE it!
