I have always gone to the pay carwash and sprayed some degreaser on the engine... let it sit for a few minutes and then spray it down with the pressure washer. Don't focus the spray on any electronic areas (driver's side fender well) or obvious mating surfaces for extended periods. Should come out looking brand new.
I did that on my brother in laws trade in 01 f350 7.3. When we started it, it misfired and blew the motor. He had a chip in it. Lucky the dealer that took the trade in warrantied the motor he just had to buy a computer. #8 cylinder had no compression. Chugged like a freight train.
The few times I felt the urge to clean any of my engines I have used a steam cleaner as does my dealer. Not dumping water on it that way. Plus the it seems steaming does a better job.
Of course this will lead us up to 'what cleaners' and so on to use.. Simple Green, or not to simple green.. Its a matter of choice as to how to clean the mill.. If its not to dirty and just a detail, try a mild soap or carpet cleaner first, sprayed on followed up by a light pressure wash or garden hose.. Stay away from forcing water into areas where it shouldn't be as well as keeping clear of the insulating pads on the hood (if equipped) as well as the ones on the the inner fenders.. Some of the degreasers have an 'odor' when cooked onto the engine that takes a while to dissapate.. Blow it dry with air if available so not to leave water marks and such.. And 'tidy up' the under hood pieces with extra cleaner/glaze ect for a finish look..If its a bit more of a mess, try using a stronger Non Caustic type cleaner with a soak time, and again, a light pressure wash..
