Saturday I took my truck into the shop. They pulled the following codes and wanted to start throwing a bunch of parts at it with no real awnser as to why these codes were coming up. Hope that someone out there has a little insight and help.
31 dni
32 dni egr valve position
96 j30 fuel pump circuit
41 hi fuel control
They said right off the bat that they would put a new egr valve and sensor on it and that would be $225.00 and no gaurantee that the check engine light wouldn't come back on. They had no explenation for the fuel codes other than maybe an intermittent problem with the switch for the two tanks on the dash. I was not real satisfied with their diagnosis and it cost me $80.00 for them to tell me this. Any help and recommendations would be great.
The truck is a 92 f-250 with a 460 and manual transmission.
31: PFE or EVP circuit below minimum voltage of 0.24 volts.
On your EGR valve, you should see the sensor. It's either Gray or Black. Remove the EVP (3 bolts holding it on EGR). Turn the key to ON. Get a voltmeter and backprobe the wires. There's 3 Wires, and I'm not exactly sure which 2 give you the voltage readings. Push down on the EVP pintle and watch the Voltmeter. The more you push the pintle, the higher the voltage should go. If it doesn't, the EVP is bad.
32: EVP circuit below minimum voltage of 0.24 volts. Same thing as 31... I think your EVP is bad.
Make sure that if you buy a new EVP, that it matches the color of your old one. (gray or black).
41:HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean (right side)
When was the last time you replaced your O2 sensor? A dead or bad O2 can cause this code.
$225 for the EGR valve and EVP is a LOT. The EVP is $30 and EGR is $80. You can install them yourself and save over $100.
Thanks for the reply. I will test the evp on saturday and just replace the the sensor and valve all at once. As for the o2 sensor I have never replaced it in the five years and 80,000 miles that I have put on the truck. I did have a problem a couple of years ago with the cat being plugged and I just knocked out the guts of it and put it back on. Will the cat being hollow cause any problem with the o2 sensor? What about that final code
The cat being hollow won't affect your O2. But since you haven't replaced it in over 80K miles, I'd change it out. I've been told to replace them every 60K. They run about $45.
96: Fuel pump secondary circuit failure battery to EEC (Inertia switch).
I'm not sure what this code means, hopefully someone will post about this code.
There is a procedure at http://fordfuelinjection.com that will tell you how to read codes without a reader. I don't think it's real complicated. If you have to read them again you might take a look at that site and maybe read them yourself. Also has code definitions for 2 and 3 digit codes. Lots of other good info too. Take note of the "best viewed" resolution note if it doesn't look just right.
