I have a 91 Bronco fullsize with a 351w and it keeps burning up the donut gasket on the right side. When this begins to happen there is significant loss in power. Could anyone please have any idea what is wrong? Do I a clogged exhaust or bad gasket somewhere? Any suggestions are welcome.
A clog, sure that is a possibility. As far as the decrease in power when it burns up, that is probably due the the fact that the 02 sensoer is not getting a correct reading because there is an exhaust leak before the sensor. When my truck blew out an exhaust manifold stud on the passenger side and developed a small exhaust leak, the truck started pinging (detonation) bad for a little while and the check engine light came on. It eventually stopped pinging. I think that the 02 sensor and the computer had to adjust to a different air mixture. I don't recall a performance hit though.
Another thing to consider - if the donut was never seated correctly, and the new ones are not seated correctly, they will wear out quickly. Maybe one of the mating surfaces on the exhaust is out of round, or they are not lining up properly. All it takes is a small exhaust leak on the donut and it will quickly burn out, starting from where the leak is.
It HAS a donut gasket? Neither of my Bronco's have or had donut gaskets. The fit was manifold-to-Y-pipe flaring with no leaks. How interesting.
Maybe that's his problem, LOL! I just _assumed_ that there was a donut there. Most vehicles have one. I've never had to take mine apart there so maybe not?
