I managed to get 34,000 miles out of the stock Wrangler RT/S's before I had enough. Still had a good amount of tread showing, but . Had one develop a mysterious air leak a few months ago. Had to buy a new one, as it would go flat day after day. Then, this past weekend, I noticed one of the other originals was cracked & dry rotting on the sidewall! So...
...gave in and bought (4) new tires. I stepped up to the LT-rating and what a difference it makes. The Expy is so much more responsive and sure-footed now. Even my girlfriend is impressed with the ride, and it takes a lot for her to say so about anything car related. I was going to get the BFG All-Terrain T/A KO's, but I went with a tried & true favorite I had on my 94 Bronco for 100,000 miles. Kelly Springfield's Safari AWR. Definitely "a good deal on a great tire". http://kelly-springfield.com/auto/products/sawr.html
I have the same tires on my 2002 Expy also(255's though)---One of them just started to leak 3 weeks ago----Put some fix-a-flat in it and it stopped-----Will be buying 5 LT265/75R16 Bridgestone Dueler M/T (D673) W/Uni-T next weekend though.
You're not kidding. When I started pricing up the BFG AT KO's in the 17", I almost hit the floor. But, I realized if you want that great tire, you're gonna have to pay for them. I go to the same tire dealer and they always beat any competitor's price. Got my AWR's (LT265/70R17) for $123 each.
Nitto Terra Grapplers have served me well. You can even get an "E" range tire for around $110 per from www.discounttiredirect.com (265/75/16).
I took the tires to Sam's Club and had them mounted and balanced for $3.87 per tire.
