F100 Tapered Hood Bonanza
#18
I just came back from the shop and you all (you all is a southern thing, guess my roots are showing) have pushed me to the edge, especially Axracer and Paul, anyway I have taped off the hood on my truck, taking out about 2 1/2 inches at the front I will have to wait and see if I have the forditude to actually cut it. I have to work tomorrow morning but will be in the shop in the PM (unless I get a better offer) and there is no telling what may happen. questions? comments?

Tim, with your bodywork skills it ought be a piece o cake. I might cut across the hood a few inches in front of the rear lip and put a filler strip in between after sliding the top forward. It would keep the sides in correct alignment and you wouldn't need to recreate the doubled lip edge?

this has been a fun thread, I hope I don't kill it. If anyone remembers the hood scoop thread you'll remember that I posted about plans for a scratch built steel hood scoop, well it was hammered out a week or so ago and I was ready to start the mods on the hood when this thread came up. that being said I decided against the taper (for now at least) and instead cut the hood down the middle with a nibbling tool (takes out about 3/32 of an inch) and hammered the center peak almost flat, tapered it from the front emblem all the way to the rear. now the hood scoop looks like Henry put it there himself. This scoop is real similar to the 04 Mustang GT. I may still pie-cut the front of the hood but it won't be as much, maybe an inch or so. Taking that peak off REALLY changed the shape when viewed from the side, the peak is an inch high or more in some areas. Someone correct me on this if I am wrong but the metal on the hood seems to be much thinner than the on the rest of the truck. I took some pictures today I will post them ASAP. I am anxious to hear some feedback. by the way Ax, you are right about the rear cut, that became real obvious when I was measuring the hood today. good call

hmmmm....could look real nice if you did it right...could look like crap if you do it wrong....your the big metal fabricator though, so if you do cut and change your mind, like you said, its only like 4-5 feet of bead you have to put back in there...dont burn any holes in it
i say go for it...could look real nice, fatfenders...

Tim, your metalwork is great. I do like the removal of the peak. The second hood scoop pic gave me a thought: What if you closed the cowl vent, but instead of filling it flush you sunk it say 1/4" starting at the edge of the cowl (that's assuming it is the same width as the scoop which is what it looks like in the pic if not, line up the edges with the scoop). That would give a different from the norm and sculptural detail to integrate the cowl and the scoop, and relate to your rounded corners. I could sketch it up for you to think about if you'd like.
