Mechanical fuel pump reliability?

My E150 is 20 years and at 70k miles it seems the past 3 years everything is going at once. I don't wanna get stuck in East Bumfield again.
My question is, will a mechanical fuel pump usually give a sign that it is on it's way to break down. It has been my experience that the motor will start to stall out when the gas pedal is pressed down, letting off on it will bring the motor back to running.
I just wonder if anyone has ever gotten stuck where the fuel pump (NOT ELECTRONIC) just failed without warning.
Their is a saying don't fix it if it ain't broke. But I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Hi,

Well Mech fuel pumps aren't that expensive so I guess that you could buy one and just stow it away in the van till needed.

The only experiance I have heard of a Mech fuel pump failing was when the owner noticed that fuel was mixing with the oil. The diaghram had torn and was allowing gas to get into the crankcase.

I don't think that the pump will give you much of a warning when it is about to fail.

If I remember correctly there is a bleed hole on the top of the pump as well. If you see fuel weeping from that it's time to replace it ASAP.

If you're that worried about it just replace it for peace of mind. A bit of a hassle but better than breaking down miles from home. Think of it as preventive maintenance.
