Clunk (I know, I know), but it's different....

It doesn't happen when i take off and it doesn't happen when i turn or flex the suspension. It only happens when braking, specifically when i come to a complete stop and the suspension is settling back. It doesn't happen all the time and i cannot figure it out for the life of me. Any ideas?

Thanks

Mark

How many miles are on the truck? I'm thinking probably a bad ball joint.

might want to look at brake pads. Please put up a signature with vehicle info. This would help us.

Could be anything from rear brake shoes, front pads, loose or broken shock...

You don't have anything in your bed right?

Is it a heavy clunk or does it sound like something is hitting underneath there?

Nope, nothing in the bed. It doesn't like something is hitting anything, hard to desrcibe. Imediately after the truck settles back from braking, there is an extra thunk.

Hmmm...well your probably going to have to try and isolate it it by checking a few things. Aside from above the only thing I could suggest is checking the torque specs on the rear suspension/shocks and see if it still does it. After the lift did you go back and re-torque everything? Your exhaust isn't hitting your spring is it?

Thanks Bear. I did re-torque everything, several times, but will do so again.

Does it do it going in reverse? Try going faster and stopping harder to create more body/suspension rebound/settlement. Maybe the sound will be louder or harder.

Also, try to see if you can "feel" the sound through your foot and isolate the general area it is coming from...front/back, left/right.

See if you or a friend can hang out/down an open door with your head below the sill plate while it is happening...just make sure you are in a clear parking lot with no obstructions so you will not lose your head (literally)

I know a lot of people on here who have had a "clunk" had it coming from the slip joint on the stock rear driveshaft. When they regreased the slip joint the "clunk" went away. I think there might be something about it in the FAQ at the top of the forum...can't remember for sure.
Not sure if that's what you are experiencing or not but it may be something to look into.

Sounds alot like the rear diff settling due to loose ubolts on the springs, but you said you checked them, right?

Is the carrier bearing housing still tight? I guess you re-torqued it too, right?

What about the carrier bearing itself? Is the boot loose?

Sounds like somebody might have left a quart behind the seat???

I guess pounding you for answers is the best I can do, MARZ.

I had this same issue in my previous truck, a 93 F-150 with a 302 V-8. I bought the truck in August of 1995 with 21,000 miles and sold it in January 2005 with 110K miles. It did this from the day I bought it to the day I sold it. Dealer was never able to find it. I know it's annoying and I'm sure you don't want to read this but that was my experience. Mine felt like the whole truck moved a half inch or so after you stopped.

That's exactly what it feels like!

DC..don't think it's the drive shaft clunk, never happens on take off.

Big Orn...i am going to re-torque every bolt this Saturday. We'll see if i find a loose one or not.

Thanks to all that replied.
