hi, i have a 99 f250 sd 5.4, and i just ordered a flomaster 40 single in, dual out for it with prebent pipes and tips. however, would it hurt anything if i put this system on without my cat in place? we have no emsission testing here, and i want to sound as good as i can. someone once mentioned that removing a cat can burnup valve seals??? how true is this? also, i am debating just doing a turndown dump after the flowie. if i do that instead, would i be better off doing 2 seperate dumps(one for each flowie outlet), or should i "y" them together into a single dump. and how far back from the cab do i have to put it to not have too much annoying resonanse? thanks in advance !!!
leave the cat in there, remove the muffler and replace the exhaust pipes from the car back with a 3" or 4" dia. pipes (pipes running as originals all the way to the back) you will get great sound and free flow.
so are you leaning towards removing the muffler entirely? what i did first was to cut out the stock muffler, and had a 3" pipe bent to just bolt up to the stock pipe in the mufflers place..... it sounded good when i was on the gas at about 2ooo rpm, but other than that, it had a funny sound. so then i took out the entire pipe after the cat and that just has way too much resonance in the cab. so now i bought the flomaster 40 series to put up, with dual 2 1/4 outlets with stainless echo tips on the back. what are your thought on that? thank you.
well, i like look for performance ,better flow, gas mil, power, torque, speed than actual sound or looks but it is me.
i prefer quiet smooth sound at cruise, with a bit of roar powering up or jay brake effect .
do what you like my friend, its your truck, your money, your time if you dont like the way it came out do it again, you dont have to impress nobody but yourself.
i have a 2000 f-150 5.4, i repaced shocks, airfilter, exhaust and installed a rear anti sway bar ,i got geat handling, breaking (love to drive my truck in the rain) and get 16 mpg on the hwy
i am a lot the way you are, i am always tinkering with my cars, computers, radios now i am trying to hook up satellite tv to my computer and recieve signal for free.
yeah, im always doing something. as for this exhaust deal, those pre-bent pipes are really kicking my butt. i cant seem to get them in and look right in my eyes. so i was thinking about just scrapping the pipes and doing turn downs. but i do however like the looks of stainless tips. so im not sure which way to go. if i do a turndown, how far is best to take them beyond the muffler? thanks.
turn downs are great... but if your going to dump it you have to be prepared for the sound its ganna make in your cab... especially if your thinking about taking off a cat... dump your pipes about a foot behind the drivers seat... tahts what i did for mine and it sounds great...
I have an 88 f-150 that I put in an SVT 5.0 with a B&M blower, removed the computer and the fuel injection and put on two 650 carbs. (actually get 2 MPG better than stock 5.0) Ford injection is not all that fuel efficient. I removed the exhaust, put on a set of hooker headers, duals into flowmaster 40's and empty cats. turned out 3 1/2" stainless tubing just in front of rear tires.
The fun part was when I hooked up a spare coil under the hood and trigger off an induction pickup and ran a plug wire pack to the end of the exhaust where I welded in a bung and installed a spark plug on each pipe. WOW does this thing blow flames out the pipes when I get on it, even more when I downshift. It's nice to have a spare 535 HP toy around when I get bored.
No, you shouldn't have to run any extra fuel. I never tried this with a FI engine but I emagine it will work (maybe not as well). It's pretty neat at night!
