400 pistons from the bottom?

Is it true that you can't pull 400 pistons from below? I'm doing my piston rod bearings this weekend and I may need to pull one rod for machining . . . .

Yes it's true. You'll have to take the head off. Piston pin on the 400 is press fit to the rod so you can't even fudge the rod out the bottom leaving the piston up in the bore.

The only engine I can think of from which pistons are changed through the bottom is the old Offenhauser racing engine. It had no removable cylinder head.

Good luck,
Doc

Thanks everyone.

I guess it comes down to how out of round the rod and cap are . . . . if it's too bad: off with the head!
