Is it possible to swap the gauge cluster w/o the tach, and swap one in with a tach?
I mean will the wire harness be the same, so I can simply plug it in?
I would assume I would need to run a negative in off the col for the tach, but other than that.....

Yes, 92-96 for 92-96 trucks, and 91 back for the older trucks.
If you were to pick up a cluster with a tach, all you have to do is remove your speedometer and install it in place of the one on the new cluster, doing this will retain your mileage. Then install the cluster, no wires to run.
92-93 are different than 94-96. The battery light is in a different location and the voltmeter is wired differently. If you swap between these years you'll have to study a wiring diagram and do some slight rewiring, otherwise you'll have charging problems.

We had a long thread on this a while back, and that was the consensus. However, I do have at the moment a 96 F450 diesel tach cluster in my 93 F350 crewcab, and I changed no wiring at all, and my truck does charge fine and all the gauges work as bad as they did before I swapped the cluster.
I took it out temporarily because I'm making a new dash, and since I've been driving around without any dash whatsoever, I didn't want to damage the modified t-bird digital cluster by having it slap around on the column as well as my knees. So I pulled an old cluster out of the closet and slapped it in temporarily.
