hey i was wondering if an AOD tranny out of an 86 crown vic would be able to handle 350 to 400 hp from a 351W. what all would i have to do in order to make it handle that much power. i know i need a Lokar shifter bracket for the 4 barrel carb. how much would it cost to build this tranny up? the reason is because i already have both engine and trans and i think it would be cheaper to build this trans up rather than buying a different one and building it up.
well, the overdrive servo is a weak point in these units, also, pre-1989 AOD's have bad tailshaft lubrication. Those are starting points.
If you want the best AOD's, they came in the 3/4 ton vans and trucks after 1988, or the supercharged 3.8L tbirds..
NONE of those will handle 300+ horse without modifications tho, check out companies like Baumann Engineering for more info... use google or something to find their website and read the stuff they have posted.. excellent info for what you want to do.
