2nd gear

I have a 95 F150 with the mazda 5 speed. I always have trouble getting it in 2nd gear until it warms up. When it is really cold outside I just skip 2nd and go right to 3rd because it just won't go in. I know several other people that have the same trans and they have the same problem. Is this a common problem with these tranny's? I there anything I can do to improve or fix it? I already tried putting synthetic oil in it, that helped but it is still not where I want it. Any help would be appreciated.

My 91 ZF acts the same way. I'am thinking about adding a small
amount of Max-Life moly to see if that will help...dbr

Mine did that prior to me replacing it. I had 200000 miles on it when I decided to replace it (pilot bearing went out). It is just a sign that the tranny is on its way out. When I did put the rebuilt in, it was alot heavier duty than the original (probably about 50-75 pounds heavier) and shifts like a dream now.

Couleeman, Did you put a rebuilt mazda in or did you swap for the ZF? Ricedb, I replaced my fluid with Redline MTL, I had read about it on this forum and I can tell the difference especially with 3rd and 4th gear. However 2nd is still being stubborn until the tranny warms up then it shifts better.

I put in the Mazda. I looked into the ZF and the T-18 but a friend (inlaws run a tranny shop) got me the tranny and clutch for less than I could find a used ZF and his father in law said the rebuilt heavy duty would give me another 200000 miles considering I got 200000 out of the stock one. Just a simple swap and with my friends help (or me helping him) it was in and out in about 4 hours.
