I've got a 2004 6.0 powered F250, I'm looking to install a break controller to stop my tri axle flat bed trailer. I will probably be towing 10 to 15K lbs with it.
What is being used out there? I understand there is a plug for it under the dash? Does plugging into this automatically connect the controller to the trailer plug in the back? Thanks for the reply.
Get the Prodigy. Also, order the specific pigtail for the Ford. Makes it a two plug installation. One end in the truck plug, the other in the prodigy. Two screws to mount the holder and you are done.
You can't go wrong with a Prodigy, very smooth.... I have also heard that the Jordan is a fantastic solution too, but more costly. The Jordan works by attaching a cord to the brake pedal so you get truly proportional application.
Prodigy with quick disconnect and Ford harness. It's about $30 to $50 more then most but worth every penny.
Tried one made by Valley and I was constantly having to adjust it for highway, intown, highway, offramp, etc, etc. I felt that it was unsafe having to monkey with the controller while trying to safely stop the TT.
Be sure to set it up per the instructions... very easy.
Another vote for the Prodigy. I've gone thousands of miles without having to readjust. The only time I move anything is when I change the weight on the flat-deck a lot.
Save yourself the 10 minutes of work and go buy an 05 with the brake controller built in. If you cant afford the $40K for for a Ford brake control then I definately reccomend the Prodigy.
After using the Prodigy controller for over 3 years in 2 different trucks and loving it, I was tickled to find my new 05 with the built in controller was manufactured by Prodigy. I towed last weekend and did a few test emergency stops and it is amazing! Feels like the trailer is really part of the truck. Hard when you need it, soft when you don't, and no jerking. My old aftermarket Prodigy was equally as impressive, but not intergrated with the ABS as the new one is. The after market Prodigy unit has a really cool feature to also select your boost level. When I was in heavy fast moving freeway traffic, I would put the boost on 2, for normal, I would put the boost on 1. Looks like the Prodigy wins in this thread! Glad to see Ford agreed and used in on their SD.
Thanks for the info everybody, looks like the prodigy is the one to get. I'm happy that all I have to do is "plug and play" to get it to work, I never liked running my own wires in trucks. Can I get +12 volts out of the trailer connector plug to run accessories. Is this fused, how many amps can I get outa this with out a melt down?
