Question Rear End Shudder

I have a 99 Ranger 4.0 auto 4x4.. And everytime (since i had it 80,000 miles now 105,000) i come to a stop or take off from a stop the rear end will shudder and it will do it sometimes droping out of a gear, into another mainly 4th and 5th.
I looked at the u-joints and there ok, shocks are nice and tight to the axle and all u bolts and springs look fine..Had it on a lift and saw there was play while turning the driveshaft but mechanic said it's norm for 105,000 miles. Someone told me it could be the center bearing?? Any help guys!?!

could be the center bearing, but check the slip yoke first, probably needs some grease. check the tech info sticky at the top of the forum for more info.

I would tend to agree. If you have play in the driveshaft center carrier bearing it won't be a good thing. If you say you checked the u-joints already, did you see if there is any damage to the shaft it'self? A dent in the shaft will throw it off balance.

Did you check the u-joints without any load on the drive train? Was it in nuetral? IF the truck is in gear when you check the u-joints, they may appear to be good when in fact they are not.

Well since my truck doesn't have a slip yoke i can't grease it..
And yes the truck was on a lift when i checked the u joints, and the driveshaft doesn't have a single ding or dent on it.. But if it was the u joints wouldn't ya think they would of already blown over 25,000 miles?
Anyways, how much work is it to replace the center carrier bearing?

I have the same truck as you and have always experienced the same problem. I always thought it was the slip yolk as well. It's just the way it's designed. Try throwing 100-150 pounds of weight into the bed. Should help align things better and is a good indicator of the slipyolk not sitting in line.

Was it in nuetral when you checked the u-joints?

I really don't think the u-joints are your problem as that would be more of a clunk than a shudder, but it is easy enough to eliminate as a cause. That's why I am trying to confirm you checkd th u-joints in neutral.
