OK, I have a 95 F150 with the 4.9l, I have noticed the idiot gauge getting worse. I am planning on changing the sender, but I wanted to do the fix where you bypass the 20ohm resistor on the back of the dash with a jumper and put in a pressure switch. I haven't been able to find what send/switch to use on my year and engine, even after searching the forums. I know it was from a previous year, but which one?
You need to clarify things a little. What idiot light or gauge are you talking about? Is it the oil pressure guage? I'm more than willing to help you but frankly, I'm a little bit confused. Describe the problem in a little better detail, and you'll get some results.
Sorry, I posted it once and it had a server error so I had to retype and must have missed some things. I am talking about the oil pressure guage and how it is just an on/off switch right now. I would like to put in the pressure sender that allows me to get a little better idea as to what is actually going on. Don't want an extra guage, trying for a clean stock look. I know you can do it on 5.0's with a sender from a t-bird?? but I don't know if it will work the same for the 4.9.
I'm not too familiar with the 95's, so I'm not sure what they've done with the oil pressure gauge. It looks as though the original is just basically a pressure/no pressure deal and you want it to give you an idea of how much pressure you've got instead of just "enough". Are all of the 90's the same in that respect? I'm not sure, but I would think that the instrument cluster is the same regardless of what engine is in the truck. So, you should be able to do the exact same mod, and have it work. The only problem might be if the threads in the block for the sending unit are different on the 5.0 and 4.9, then you'd have to find another sending unit that would work. Otherwise, it sounds like it would work.
I know it will work if I can find out if the sender that is used to do this switch on a 5.0 will work on a 4.9. Yes, all the oil pressure guages from 91 on for sure, are just an open/closed circuit that shows pressure above 6 psi. I need to know what year/model of vehicle will have the pressure sensative switch in it. I heard of using a t-bird oil pressure switch, but I need to know if this will work in the block of a 4.9.
Go to your local parts house (NAPA, etc.) and ask to compare the two. That'll save you the aggravation of going through the trouble of removing the old one. They may not only be the same threads, but they might even be the same sending unit.
Ok, that would be great if I knew what year/model I needed to get one from. I know I will have to compare, but I need to know what to compare what is in there now with what I need to replace it with.
Last I had anything to do with an oil pressure sender, on a 78 302. it was pipe thread. Thus, if one is 3/8s and the other 1/2 or something like that, it is easily fixed with a visit to ye olde plumbing dept.
Your mileage may vary, but think about it--why wouldn't they keep using pipe thread? What else is there for such a hook up?
