rear doors

OK, recently we've talked about swapping composite headlights for sealed beams and converting 2WD to AWD, so how about this? I'd like to swap my rear hatch for the split doors from a cargo van. I think that they'd be easier to open with a trailer hitched up.

Did Ford put the hinge mounting points on all Aerostar bodies or just the cargo versions? I'd be inclined to think they'd all have them for simplicity and economics of scale, but I don't know for sure. So is it a straight-forward swap?

Oh, along the same lines, does anyone make a spare carrier that goes on the back door like you see on full-size conversion vans for the Aerostar?

I would like to know also. The rear hatch seems to be a PIA for constant opening/closing for groceries and whatever.

I would check out JCwhitney.com or some other 4x4 places. It should not be too tuff to modify, I would just make sure to re-inforce where it is bolted to with some 1/4" steel.

I looked a while back and did not see any place to mount the brackets for the door hinges - so I think they would need to be welded/drilled.

The "barn door" cargo vans also have a different rear bumper &/or bumper cover. They don't have the radiused kick-up at the sides because that's where the lower hinge sits.

I am guessing that no interior trim panels were available for the barn doors.

I wish passenger minivans were available with swinging doors (the passenger Astro is no more, isn't it?). I hate hatches - they are too heavy and the gas cylinders don't work properly in really cold weather.

Sigh...

Cheers,
Eric
