six or 12 volt?

I purchased an old chipper with a Ford in line six. There was no battery in it.
How can I tell if it is a six or twelve volt system and if it is a positive ground or
not. It has a generator.
thanks for any clues...

What brand is the chipper?

What type of ignition system is on the engine? Ford would be (-) ground.

Is the electrical system "lucas"(SDK)? If so most of them were (+) positive ground.

These will give us some info to help you.

Is the battery cables still on the unit? If so look at the battery terminals and see if one has a larger (not by much) opening then the other. The larger should be the (+) positive cable. You can follow this to where it attaches and give you an idea of grounding system.

All equipment I have seen with Ford engines were (-) Ground and 12v! That does not imply that other system are not out there or in use!

6 V electrics were gone by the late '50s. If you have a 240 or 300 six, those were mid '60s intro, and should be 12 V.
